What Flour Bluff does to a window
Flour Bluff is the stretch of mainland between Oso Bay and the Laguna Madre, just before the causeway to Padre Island. It is lower and more open than the rest of Corpus Christi, and the southeast wind crosses the Laguna Madre and hits the homes along Laguna Shores Road and the streets off Waldron Road with very little in the way. The salt film on the east and south glass comes back in two or three weeks. On the other side of the Bluff, homes along Oso Bay and the roads near the naval air station get bay humidity, which keeps the shaded glass damp and lets mildew take hold on screens and north-facing panes.
The Bluff is also drier underfoot than it looks. Between the open lots, the ranch land south of Yorktown and the unpaved shoulders along Flour Bluff Drive, a dry spell puts a fine dust in the air that settles on sills and tracks all over the neighborhood. When the rain finally comes it turns that dust to a film that streaks. The same hard city water that spots glass on the Southside runs the sprinklers here, so lower panes near the lawn collect a white mineral line. Older homes with jalousie and single-hung windows have more edges and tracks for all of it to collect in, and those take real attention on the first visit.
