What Portland does to a window
Portland sits on the north shore of Corpus Christi Bay and Nueces Bay, across the causeway from the city, up on a bluff that gives the whole town a view of the water. The same southeast wind that coats Corpus Christi crosses the open bay and arrives in Portland with nothing to stop it, so the salt haze on south-facing glass along the bluff and in the Northshore neighborhoods comes back within two or three weeks. Homes down near Indian Point and the causeway get it worst, with spray off the bay on a rough day drying in streaks on the windows.
Away from the bluff, along Wildcat Drive, Moore Avenue and the newer streets off Highway 181, the salt is lighter but the dust is heavier. Portland is surrounded by farmland and open ground, and in a dry spell the wind lifts a fine grit off the fields that settles into tracks and screens. When the rain comes it dries to a film. Sprinklers run on very hard water here, so the lower panes near the lawn collect a white mineral line.
